A landmark chapter has been added to the illustrious history of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, as the 600,000th unit of the iconic off-roader has officially rolled off the production line in Graz, Austria. The milestone model, a striking Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology (combined energy consumption: 30.3‒27.7 kWh/100 km | combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km | CO₂ class: A), is finished in the elegant hue of Obsidian Black Metallic.
Often celebrated as the “best off-road vehicle in the world,” the G-Class has remained a paragon of resilience, capability and unmistakable design since its debut in 1979. For over four decades, it has deftly blended rugged off-road prowess with the refinement, comfort and safety standards expected of a Mercedes-Benz.
This latest milestone pays tribute to a continuing legacy of excellence and exclusivity. The G-Class has long been synonymous with limited production series that captivate collectors and enthusiasts alike. Among the most recent examples is the G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s—a highly exclusive, small-batch model that pays homage to the original W 460 series of the 1980s. That series not only captured hearts with its unique combination of off-road strength and on-road civility but also set the foundation for what would become one of Mercedes-Benz’s most revered nameplates.
The G-Class’s evolution has also brought with it unprecedented opportunities for customisation. No other Mercedes-Benz model offers a greater degree of personalisation. Since the introduction of the MANUFAKTUR programme in 2019, the appetite for bespoke features has grown exponentially. Today, over 90 percent of G-Class customers select at least one MANUFAKTUR option—averaging three per vehicle. This demand has culminated in a palette of more than 20,000 paint colours available since 2024, including heritage shades inspired by classic designs from the model’s early years.
From its early utilitarian roots to its current status as a luxury lifestyle symbol, the G-Class has retained its distinctive character and enduring visual language. Hallmark design elements such as round headlights, a prominent side-hinged rear door with exposed spare wheel, and its unmistakably angular silhouette continue to distinguish the modern G from its original predecessor.
Beneath the heritage-rich exterior, the G-Class remains as capable as ever. It continues to feature a robust ladder frame, permanent all-wheel drive, and three 100% locking differentials—cornerstones of its legendary off-road performance. Even as the model embraces electrification with the latest G 580 EQ Technology, it maintains the uncompromising versatility that has defined it since day one.
Since its initial launch in spring 1979—offering a selection of four engines ranging from 53 kW (72 hp) to 110 kW (150 hp), along with short-wheelbase convertibles and both short- and long-wheelbase station wagons—the G-Class has steadily risen to become one of the longest-produced model series in Mercedes-Benz history, standing proudly alongside the S-Class and E-Class.
Now, with the 600,000th unit completed, the G-Class remains not only a symbol of enduring automotive heritage but also a forward-looking ambassador for sustainable luxury and custom-crafted individuality.
