BYD India, a subsidiary of BYD and the world’s largest New Energy Vehicle manufacturer, has showcased its globally acclaimed DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) technology in India, signalling a major step forward in the country’s sustainable mobility journey.

Set to arrive in the Indian market soon, the advanced plug-in hybrid technology has been engineered to combine electric mobility with long-distance practicality, offering a combined driving range of more than 1,200 km.

Unlike conventional hybrid systems that are primarily engine-driven, BYD’s DM-i technology follows an electric-first philosophy. In everyday driving conditions, the vehicle operates predominantly on battery power, enabling a significant portion of journeys to be completed in pure EV mode.

The petrol engine intelligently adapts to varying driving demands. It can function as a generator to charge the battery while the electric motor powers the wheels, or directly assist propulsion during higher power requirements.

Commenting on the development, Mr. Rajeev Chauhan, Head of Electric Passenger Vehicles Business at BYD India said, “The introduction of DM-i technology marks a pivotal step in our commitment to making sustainable mobility more versatile and accessible for Indian consumers. By enabling electric-first driving for daily use while seamlessly supporting long-distance travel, DM-i addresses some of the most pressing barriers to the adoption of sustainable motoring in India. With this innovation, we are bringing a new technology to Indian consumers, and also shaping a smarter, more flexible pathway towards sustainable transportation.”

BYD’s plug-in hybrid journey began in 2008 with the unveiling of the BYD F3DM at the Geneva Motor Show — recognised as the world’s first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle. Since then, the company has evolved into the global leader in plug-in hybrid manufacturing, with cumulative production crossing 8 million units worldwide.

At the heart of the DM-i system is BYD’s 1.5-litre Xiaoyun petrol engine, delivering an industry-leading thermal efficiency of 43.04 per cent. Working alongside high-speed electric motors, the system seamlessly transitions between multiple driving modes to maximise efficiency and performance.

The EV Mode delivers fully electric driving for urban commutes, while the HEV “Series” Mode allows the engine to function purely as a generator, maintaining the refined driving feel of an EV. Under stronger acceleration demands, HEV “Parallel” Mode enables the petrol engine to directly support propulsion.

BYD says the DM-i system has been developed around six core strengths — Fast, Saving, Quiet, Smooth, Green and High Safety.

Performance remains a standout highlight, with 0-100 km/h acceleration achieved in under 5.5 seconds. Fuel efficiency is equally impressive, with claimed consumption figures of 4.8 litres per 100 km under NEDC testing conditions.

The company also emphasises superior NVH levels, smooth power delivery through its Electric Hybrid System (EHS), and enhanced safety via BYD’s Blade Battery technology.

Looking ahead, BYD confirmed that DM-i technology will play a key role in its India roadmap for 2026, supporting portfolio expansion and reinforcing its focus on sustainable and intelligent mobility solutions for the Indian market.
