The Tata Tiago iCNG has quietly become one of the most influential vehicles in India’s alternative-fuel passenger car segment. Since its debut in 2022, Tata Motors has sold an estimated 1.75 lakh units, thanks largely to its pioneering twin-cylinder CNG technology that redefined practicality in a category traditionally known for compromises.

With the arrival of the next-generation Tiago, Tata has further refined the formula. While the petrol and electric variants continue to attract attention, it is the Tiago iCNG that stands out as the range’s most significant evolution. Priced from INR 5.79 lakh to INR 8.55 lakh (ex-showroom), the Tiago iCNG AMT promises low running costs without sacrificing comfort, safety or driving enjoyment.

Visually, the Tiago iCNG mirrors its petrol-powered sibling, adopting the sharper and more contemporary styling introduced with the latest update. A redesigned front fascia, sleeker detailing and more assertive proportions help the hatchback project a noticeably more mature road presence.

The iCNG range does forgo the flagship Creative+ trim, meaning buyers miss out on features such as wireless charging, LED fog lamps, 15-inch alloy wheels and the dual-tone black roof treatment. Nevertheless, the design remains fresh and modern, particularly in the striking Pangong Pulse shade showcased during the vehicle’s launch.

Despite its efficiency-focused powertrain, there is little about the Tiago iCNG’s appearance that signals compromise.

The cabin continues Tata’s effort to move the Tiago upmarket. Material quality, fit and finish, and overall ergonomics create an environment that feels more sophisticated than the vehicle’s price point would suggest.

However, the most impressive packaging achievement remains hidden beneath the floor. Tata’s patented twin-cylinder technology uses two 30-litre cylinders positioned beneath the luggage compartment, preserving a highly usable 242 litres of boot space.

This engineering solution addresses one of the biggest drawbacks of conventional CNG vehicles, where oversized cylinders often render luggage space virtually unusable. The Tiago iCNG remains a genuinely practical family hatchback, even when running on compressed natural gas.

Powering the Tiago iCNG is Tata’s familiar 1.2-litre three-cylinder Revotron engine. In CNG mode, it produces approximately 75.5 PS and delivers performance that feels considerably more refined than many buyers might expect from a factory-fitted CNG vehicle.

Historically, CNG cars have been associated with sluggish acceleration, noticeable fuel transitions and limited transmission choices. Tata challenged those assumptions when it introduced India’s first factory-fitted AMT-equipped CNG powertrain, and that innovation continues in the latest Tiago.

The system starts directly in CNG mode, maximising efficiency from the outset. Fuel transitions between petrol and CNG occur seamlessly through a sophisticated single-ECU setup, with virtually no noticeable interruption in power delivery.

Around town, the engine feels responsive and eager, while the AMT transmission contributes to a stress-free driving experience in heavy traffic.

One of the Tiago iCNG’s most surprising strengths is its driving character. The five-speed AMT remains smooth and intuitive, but the headline addition is the inclusion of steering-mounted paddle shifters.

Rarely seen in this segment, the paddles allow drivers to take greater control during overtaking manoeuvres or enthusiastic driving, adding an unexpected layer of engagement to the ownership experience.

The Tiago’s underlying X-Alpha architecture also contributes to a reassuring sense of solidity. Body control remains composed, while the structure feels robust and confidence-inspiring over varying road conditions.

Safety is another area where the Tiago continues to distinguish itself. Six airbags are standard across the range, complemented by Electronic Stability Control, traction control and hill-hold assist.

For the iCNG specifically, Tata has incorporated Thermal Incident Protection technology, which automatically cuts off CNG supply during a thermal event and safely vents gas through a dedicated nozzle. A Leak Detection System can also automatically switch the vehicle to petrol mode if a gas leak is detected.

During development, Tata subjected the platform to a demanding double-impact crash test scenario, designed to evaluate both occupant protection and the integrity of the CNG system. The results highlight the company’s emphasis on safety engineering and structural resilience.

The next-generation Tata Tiago iCNG AMT is far more than an economical city hatchback. It represents a thoughtful reimagining of what a modern CNG vehicle can be.

By combining innovative twin-cylinder technology, genuine boot practicality, standard six-airbag safety, seamless AMT convenience and segment-first paddle shifters, Tata Motors has created a package that feels remarkably complete.

For buyers seeking low running costs without sacrificing safety, usability or driving enjoyment, the Tiago iCNG stands as one of the most compelling hatchbacks currently available in the Indian market. More importantly, it demonstrates that choosing an efficient fuel alternative no longer requires accepting meaningful compromises.
