Why the New-Gen Tata Tiago Petrol feels like a true driver’s car
The new-generation Tata Tiago Petrol represents far more than a simple update. With a bold new design language, a significantly refined driving experience and a stronger focus on driver engagement, Tata Motors has reimagined its popular hatchback for buyers who still value the simple pleasure of driving. From its muscular stance and premium cabin to its balanced ride and reassuring build quality, the Tiago Petrol aims to deliver an experience that feels increasingly rare in today's technology-heavy automotive landscape.

The new-generation Tata Tiago Petrol embraces an entirely new visual language, moving away from the curvier silhouette of its predecessor. Under the leadership of Martin Uhlarik, Chief Design Officer at Tata Motors, the design team has given the Tiago a sharper, more aggressive stance that appears to draw inspiration from the brand’s larger SUV lineup.
The front end marks the most dramatic departure from the previous generation. Replacing the familiar honeycomb grille and traditional headlamp arrangement is a smooth, deep-black grille that stretches almost to the corners of the fascia. Sleek smoked-effect headlamps extend outward, creating a wider and more contemporary appearance. Subtly flared wheel arches add visual muscle, while the R15 diamond-cut dynamic alloy wheels on the top-spec Creative+ variant lend the hatchback a confident, planted stance.
The profile is defined by strong character lines running from the front fenders to the halo lightbar-connected tail lamps, creating a sense of movement even when stationary. The overall effect is a hatchback that appears ready to spring into action. The Tiago also carries an ageless European appeal, both in its design execution and perceived build strength.
Powering the new Tiago is the familiar 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine producing 86 PS at 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm at 3,300 rpm. While the output figures remain largely unchanged, considerable effort has gone into refining the overall driving experience.

The combination of the updated design philosophy, improved structural rigidity from the X-Alpha architecture and greater mechanical refinement results in a noticeably more polished car. Rather than chasing higher output figures, Tata Motors has focused on extracting a better driving experience from the naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine.
Driving the Tiago Petrol feels refreshingly honest. The clutch is slightly on the heavier side, but its clearly defined bite point makes city driving effortless while still providing engagement on open roads. The five-speed manual transmission stands out with short, precise throws that make every gear change feel deliberate and satisfying.
This remains a car for enthusiasts who enjoy the character of an internal combustion engine. While the platform could comfortably accommodate additional performance in the future, the existing powertrain still delivers an enjoyable experience. Despite being a three-cylinder unit, the engine produces a pleasing low-frequency growl under hard acceleration, while excellent under-bonnet insulation keeps unwanted noise in check.

The Tiago’s dynamic character complements its new design perfectly. With well-weighted steering and a balanced suspension setup, it remains genuinely enjoyable to drive.
Its compact dimensions make it agile in congested city traffic, yet it feels equally comfortable on open stretches of road and winding hill climbs. During our drive in Bengaluru’s busy urban traffic and later through the twisting roads leading up to Nandi Hills, the Tiago adapted effortlessly to both environments. The hairpin bends in particular highlighted the hatchback’s willingness to change direction and maintain composure.

The suspension strikes an impressive balance. It is firm enough to control body roll during spirited driving while retaining the suppleness required to absorb potholes and speed breakers with ease. Tata Motors has achieved a rare balance between ride comfort and road feedback, creating an honest and reassuring connection between driver and machine.
Step inside and the shift in priorities becomes immediately apparent. While the previous generation leaned towards functionality, the new Tiago adopts a more focused, driver-centric approach.
The horizontal dashboard layout features two freestanding displays: a 10.25-inch ultra-HD touchscreen running the iRA connected car suite with more than 35 features, and a separate digital instrument cluster displaying essential driving information. Controls for climate and audio functions remain within easy reach, allowing intuitive operation without distracting the driver.
The steering wheel incorporates cruise control functions, while the top-spec Tiago Petrol adds wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a dual smartphone deck and wireless charging capability.

Material quality also leaves a positive impression. The dashboard surfaces offer pleasing textures, the door handles feel reassuringly solid, and the seat upholstery is durable enough to withstand years of daily use. Improved under-thigh support for front occupants further enhances comfort.
Tata Motors has also incorporated 20 percent recycled materials throughout the cabin. The result is a distinctive texture and finish on the dashboard and interior pillars that contributes to the cabin’s visual appeal while supporting a more sustainable approach to manufacturing.
Tata Motors’ “Fortress on Wheels” philosophy remains central to the Tiago’s appeal. The extensive use of high-tensile steel forms the foundation of the vehicle’s structural integrity, benefiting both safety and handling performance. The strong underlying architecture allows the suspension to perform effectively while contributing to the car’s reassuring road manners.

The safety package includes six airbags, ABS with EBD, Corner Stability Control, a 360-degree HD camera with 2D and 3D views, and a blind-view monitor. Yet the greatest sense of security comes from the car’s inherent solidity.
There is a reassuring heft to the doors and an unmistakable sense of structural integrity throughout the vehicle. It creates a subconscious layer of confidence that allows the driver to focus entirely on the road ahead.
There is a clear sense of commitment to uncompromising quality that defines the new-generation Tata Tiago Petrol. Rather than merely attempting to revive the small hatchback segment, it makes a compelling case for why the segment still matters.
With its attractive design, engaging driving dynamics, thoughtful cabin, strong safety credentials and vibrant colour palette, the Tiago addresses a gap many buyers may not have realised existed.

At a time when cars are increasingly becoming rolling computers, the Tiago serves as a reminder of why people fell in love with driving in the first place. The combination of affordability, driving enjoyment, comfort and safety once seemed difficult to achieve in a single package. The new-generation Tiago Petrol demonstrates that it is entirely possible.
For buyers who still enjoy driving a car rather than simply operating one, the Tiago Petrol is not only a compelling proposition, it is a refreshingly honest one.
