Mercedes-Benz India launches its first Plug-In Hybrid with new S-Class

Mercedes-Benz India has introduced the new S 450 e Launch Edition, its first plug-in hybrid model for the Indian market. The launch also brings what the brand describes as the most comprehensive update to an S-Class within a single generation, with over 2,700 components either new or revised.
Powering the S 450 e is an updated Euro 7-compliant 3.0-litre M256 Evo inline-six turbo-petrol engine producing 326 hp and 540 Nm. Paired with a 120 kW (163 hp) electric motor integrated into the 9G-TRONIC transmission, the plug-in hybrid system develops a combined 435 hp and 680 Nm. Notably, it surpasses the petrol-powered S 450 4MATIC’s output of 381 hp and 500 Nm.
A 22 kWh lithium-ion battery enables a WLTP-certified electric-only driving range of up to 115 km, allowing most urban commutes to be completed without engaging the combustion engine. The drivetrain seamlessly alternates between electric and petrol power, while the latter remains available for longer journeys.
Performance remains a key strength, with the S 450 e sprinting from 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds before reaching an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. Unlike most S-Class variants, the S 450 e is offered exclusively with rear-wheel drive.
Beyond the electrified powertrain, the updated S-Class receives significant design enhancements. New twin-star DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps with micro-LED technology increase the high-beam illumination field by around 40 per cent, while ULTRA RANGE high beam projects visibility up to 600 metres ahead. The illuminated radiator grille is approximately 20 per cent larger and now features redesigned three-dimensional chrome stars. At the rear, new tail-lamps with three chrome-framed signature stars further strengthen the model’s visual identity.
The new S-Class also debuts Mercedes-Benz’s purpose-built operating architecture, MB.OS, which acts as the vehicle’s central digital ecosystem. Complementing this is the standard MBUX Superscreen and latest-generation MBUX infotainment system, featuring the AI-based “Hey Mercedes” Virtual Assistant, an enhanced Zero Layer interface and MBUX Surround Navigation powered by Google Maps.
Comfort and ride quality continue to be central to the S-Class experience. AIRMATIC air suspension comes as standard, along with rear-axle steering at 4.5 degrees. Customers can also opt for 10-degree rear-axle steering, reducing the turning circle by nearly two metres. Using Car-to-X data shared via the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud, the suspension can proactively prepare for speed breakers and road surface imperfections.
Safety remains a hallmark of the flagship limousine, which features an enhanced adaptive restraint system, PRE-SAFE® Impulse belt pretensioners and up to 15 airbags.
With the S 450 e Launch Edition, Mercedes-Benz India expands its electrified portfolio while introducing a new benchmark for luxury plug-in hybrid mobility in the country.
