Xiaomi SkyNomad Series reinvents the electric SUV as a smart living space

Xiaomi EV has officially introduced the SkyNomad Series, marking the arrival of the second product family under the Xiaomi EV brand. While the Xiaomi SU7 and Xiaomi YU7 Series have been positioned as “the driver’s car”, the new SkyNomad Series has been conceived as an “intelligent, reconfigurable, large-space SUV”, expanding the company’s electric vehicle portfolio with a distinctly different proposition.

Together, the two product families represent two complementary approaches shaped through more than five years of Xiaomi’s automotive journey. Whereas the Xiaomi SU7 and Xiaomi YU7 Series place the emphasis firmly on the driving experience, the SkyNomad Series has been developed around the people inside the vehicle, creating a cabin designed to function as a living space that evolves with the changing demands of the day. Its introduction marks another significant milestone in Xiaomi EV’s steadily expanding portfolio.

China’s automotive industry has progressed at remarkable pace in recent years. Spacious six- and seven-seat SUVs equipped with increasingly sophisticated features have become commonplace, leaving buyers with an abundance of choice.

However, Xiaomi believes consumer expectations are evolving. Rather than simply prioritising larger cabins or softer seating, buyers are increasingly seeking interiors that offer a greater sense of comfort, ease and adaptability throughout daily life.

The company says this changing perspective mirrors the way modern owners actually use their vehicles. Whether commuting for up to two hours each day, taking a break in the driver’s seat, working remotely from a parked vehicle, travelling with family over the weekend, or turning the car into a temporary home while camping, today’s vehicles serve far more than a purely transport-focused role.

For many owners, a car has become an extension of everyday living while remaining constantly on the move.

According to Xiaomi, this philosophy became the foundation of the SkyNomad project when development commenced in early 2023.

The SkyNomad Series has been developed on Xiaomi’s all-new Kunlun Architecture, an entirely new platform created from early 2023 specifically to enable highly reconfigurable interior layouts.

Within its SUV body style, the architecture combines a flat floor with a long-track seating system, allowing the cabin to transition seamlessly between multiple configurations. In driving mode, it offers generous accommodation for passengers, luggage and pets, while stationary it can be transformed into a workspace, a lounge or a family activity area.

Xiaomi says delivering such flexibility required the integration of artificial intelligence, its expansive smart-device ecosystem and advanced smart manufacturing capabilities—three areas in which Lei Jun has previously highlighted Xiaomi’s unique depth of expertise.

“Our answer was to let intelligence define the space, to build a living interior that moves with you,” Lei Jun, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Xiaomi, wrote in a post on Weibo describing SkyNomad’s development.

Rather than targeting a single lifestyle, the SkyNomad Series has been developed for customers seeking one vehicle capable of fulfilling multiple everyday roles. It is intended to serve daily commuting, family travel and occasional work-from-car requirements, functioning as a practical and adaptable companion rather than a lifestyle statement.

Xiaomi says the series has been designed equally for professionals and parents—not as separate customer groups, but as the very same individual navigating different responsibilities throughout the day.

The Xiaomi SkyNomad Series is scheduled to launch in mainland China soon, representing the culmination of three and a half years of development.
