Renault India, the wholly owned subsidiary of Renault Group, has announced a strategic partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, marking another significant milestone in its efforts to strengthen vehicle research and development capabilities in India.

The collaboration will see Renault India utilise IIT Kanpur’s National Wind Tunnel Facility (NWTF) for advanced aerodynamic and wind-noise testing of its passenger vehicles. By combining Renault’s global engineering expertise with one of India’s most sophisticated automotive research facilities, the partnership is expected to contribute to the development of future-ready vehicles offering enhanced efficiency, safety and overall performance.

As the automotive industry increasingly focuses on precision engineering and product optimisation, aerodynamic efficiency and wind-noise refinement have become critical elements in vehicle development. Through access to the National Wind Tunnel Facility, Renault India will be able to validate aerodynamic characteristics and wind-noise performance against defined engineering targets, enabling more accurate vehicle development and engineering optimisation.

The partnership also reinforces Renault’s long-term commitment to innovation and collaborative research in India, while highlighting the country’s growing importance within the Renault Group’s global engineering and product development ecosystem.

Echoing similar sentiments, Prof. Dr. Alakesh Chandra Mandal, Department of Aerospace Engineering & Co-Ordinator, NWTF, said: “We are pleased to partner with Renault India in advancing automotive research and development. This collaboration highlights the versatility of the National Wind Tunnel Facility and represents an important opportunity to extend our expertise beyond aerospace applications to support innovation in the automotive sector.”

The National Wind Tunnel Facility is India’s first state-of-the-art facility of its kind and represents a major advancement in indigenous testing infrastructure. It features a continuous closed-jet test section measuring 3.0 m x 2.25 m, enabling highly accurate aerodynamic evaluations at speeds ranging from 80 km/h to 280 km/h. The facility is also undergoing an upgrade that will enable testing at speeds exceeding 400 km/h, further strengthening its advanced research capabilities and expanding its potential applications across multiple engineering disciplines.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Renault India and IIT Kanpur establishes a comprehensive framework covering commercial engagement, intellectual property management and confidentiality. The agreement is designed to ensure a transparent, structured and mutually beneficial collaboration, laying a robust foundation for future engineering innovation while supporting the development of next-generation passenger vehicles tailored for evolving mobility demands.
