thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology has officially inaugurated its new Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Pune, marking a significant step in the expansion of its global research and development (R&D) network. With more than 120 engineers already working at the facility, the company plans to increase its workforce to over 300 employees in the coming years, strengthening its engineering capabilities for international automotive programmes.

Following an initial build-up phase, the Pune centre is contributing to software, hardware, systems and mechanical development across global customer projects. Its remit encompasses technologies gaining prominence as vehicles become increasingly software-defined, connected and automated, including embedded systems, functional safety, cybersecurity and advanced chassis technologies. Engineers at the facility collaborate with international development teams throughout the product development lifecycle, including work on next-generation steering and chassis systems.

“The transformation of the automotive industry is increasingly driven by software, electronics and globally connected engineering teams. With our new center in Pune, we are strengthening precisely these capabilities and creating additional development capacity for our customers worldwide,” said Viktor Molnar, COO of thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology. “India offers an outstanding pool of engineering and software talent and will play an increasingly important role in our global development network.”

Pune was selected for its established automotive industry, robust engineering and software ecosystem, leading universities and extensive pool of highly qualified professionals. Located at Solitaire Business Hub 2 in the city’s Baner-Balewadi business district, the centre will initially recruit for software, hardware and mechanical engineering positions, with specialist capabilities to be added in line with evolving business and technology requirements. The company also envisages collaboration with local universities and the wider engineering community to nurture talent and encourage innovation.

“Pune is much more than an additional development location for us. We are building a key engineering hub that is fully integrated into our global R&D network,” said Dr. Björn Erbe, Senior Vice President R&D for thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology’s chassis business. “By combining strong engineering expertise in India with our global technology capabilities, we can scale development activities, strengthen key competencies and accelerate solutions for our customers worldwide.”

The inauguration also underscores India’s growing strategic importance to thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology beyond research and development. The company is establishing a sales team in Pune to deepen engagement with Indian automotive manufacturers and pursue additional local business opportunities. Subject to securing the relevant customer projects, it also intends to establish production capabilities in India.

First announced in 2025, the Pune facility has since been progressively developed and integrated into the company’s global engineering network. Its official inauguration marks the next phase of expansion, reinforcing India’s role in the company’s international engineering, sourcing and business development strategy.
