Vimag Labs secures fifth Indian patent for magnet-free electric motor technology
Vimag Labs has strengthened its intellectual property portfolio with the grant of its fifth patent in India. The latest patent protects the core architecture of the company's proprietary Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor platform, marking another significant milestone as the Bengaluru-based deep-tech firm accelerates commercial deployment across the automotive, industrial and defence sectors.

Vimag Labs has been granted its fifth patent in India, reinforcing its growing position in advanced electric motor technology. The newly awarded patent, titled “A Robust Rotating Transformer Excited Synchronous Motor and Its Control,” safeguards the foundational motor architecture underpinning the company’s proprietary Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor (VMSM) platform.
The latest intellectual property milestone represents another important step for the Bengaluru-headquartered deep-tech company as it continues to advance software-defined electric motor technologies designed for the next generation of electrification.
Unlike conventional Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs), which depend on fixed rare-earth magnets embedded within the rotor, the VMSM platform generates and controls its magnetic field in real time through power electronics and proprietary control algorithms. This enables the system to function as a brushless, slip-ring-free synchronous motor capable of matching or exceeding the performance of permanent magnet solutions, while eliminating the need for permanent magnets altogether.
With this latest grant, Vimag Labs’ intellectual property portfolio now comprises five granted patents, ten patents in the pipeline and fifteen trademarks covering motor architecture, software controls, power electronics and application-specific implementations.
The newly secured patent further strengthens the company’s competitive position as it scales commercial deployments across multiple industries. Vimag Labs currently has active pilot programmes under way with established two-wheeler and passenger car manufacturers, while expansion plans include light commercial vehicles, commercial vehicles and high-power industrial systems ranging from 200 kW to 600 kW. Additional development programmes are also progressing across robotics, defence and cooling systems.
For automotive OEMs, the VMSM platform offers two significant advantages: reduced motor costs and independence from the supply-chain risks associated with rare-earth magnets, the majority of which are currently sourced from China. The technology also aligns closely with India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives by supporting indigenous development of critical electric motor technologies.
Commenting on the achievement, Manish Seth, Co-founder and CEO, Vimag Labs, said: “This patent is the outcome of over 87,600 engineering hours. It strengthens every dimension of our commercial roadmap- OEM partnerships, licensing, manufacturing scale-up, and future growth.”
He added: “Our long-term vision is to build scalable, software-driven, magnet-free motor systems for global electrification. This innovation strengthens India’s deep-tech base across electric mobility, power electronics, robotics, defence, and clean-energy systems.”
The company has also recently secured USD 5 million in its Series A funding round led by Accel, with participation from Chakra Growth Fund and Thinkuvate. Complementing its expansion strategy, Vimag Labs has signed a manufacturing MoU with Jendamark Pvt. Ltd. to support production scale-up of its proprietary VMSM platform.
Based in Bengaluru, Vimag Labs is developing a new generation of electric motors through its patented VMSM technology, which replaces rare-earth permanent magnets with software-defined magnetic fields. The company says the platform delivers equivalent or superior performance across mobility, industrial and defence applications as it continues to expand its operations across India, Europe and the United States.
