Volkswagen has announced plans to introduce an all-new sub-4 metre compact SUV in India in 2027, marking a strategically significant move into the country’s largest passenger vehicle segment. The forthcoming model is expected to strengthen Volkswagen’s position in a fiercely contested category while becoming the brand’s most accessible offering in the Indian market.

Underpinning the new compact SUV will be the MQB-A0-IN platform, developed and tailor-made specifically for India. The architecture has been co-developed by engineering teams in India and Europe, with a strong emphasis on high localisation, efficient production timelines and low cost of ownership. It will also support efficient powertrains, advanced technology and safety systems suited to Indian emission and safety norms.

For Volkswagen, the new SUV represents more than an expansion of its product portfolio. The company says the model has been developed with Indian market preferences firmly in mind, while retaining its core values of German-engineering, safety and build quality. The MQB-A0-IN platform already forms the foundation of Volkswagen’s India-focused product strategy, enabling the brand to combine localisation with contemporary technology and engineering standards.

Commenting on the announcement, Mr. Thomas Schäfer, CEO, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brand, and Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, said, “India is a market of enormous scale and ambition, and this new compact SUV marks an important step in Volkswagen’s journey here. We are bringing our global expertise in building cars that people love to drive and own into a segment of great importance to Indian customers. This model is being developed specifically for India, and it reinforces our long-term commitment to the Indian market as part of our global growth strategy.”

Mr. Piyush Arora, Managing Director & CEO, Škoda Auto Volkswagen India, said, “This announcement reflects the depth of our commitment to India, not just as a market but as a manufacturing and innovation base for the Volkswagen Group globally. The new compact SUV will be developed in India, for India, and locally produced, building on the strength of our existing MQB-A0-IN platform ecosystem. It will deepen our supplier network, create opportunities across our manufacturing and business ecosystem, and further our vision of positioning India as a competitive development and production hub. This is Volkswagen’s continued investment in India’s growth story.”

Mr. Nitin Kohli, Brand Director, Volkswagen India, added, “With this new compact SUV, we are democratising German-engineering for the affluent Indian compact SUV buyer. The all-new SUV will deliver scale and volume, bringing our core tenets of fun-to-drive performance, safety and build quality into the largest, highest-volume segment in India. As we move closer to the 2027 market introduction, we will expand our presence in India, reaching out to a new customer base in the country.”

The upcoming Volkswagen compact SUV will therefore be central to the brand’s India strategy as it prepares to enter one of the market’s highest-volume categories. With local development and production, extensive localisation and the MQB-A0-IN platform at its core, the model is set to become an important new chapter in Volkswagen’s India journey ahead of its 2027 introduction.
